> Love & How to Make It, by Suna Rintarou and Miya Osamu.

I. NOTES.

I wrote this within three days, an impulse decision shortly after finishing my main entry for SunaOsa Week back in June of 2020 once the movie The Half Of It came out. Truthfully, I had no idea which day to slot this fic because I was very much after the bonus prompt (confession), but since the movie kind of had that autumn aesthetic, I took inspiration from that.

I had my reservations about tagging the story with The Half Of It in case it would drive people away because they didn't see the movie or assumed that the plot basically played out the same way, but I kept it regardless of the readers I would lose to pay homage to how much it inspired me, even if the story has only parallel scenes to the movie instead of anything copy-pasted. For me, this story was supposed to be a throwback to how high school, especially when we were experiencing love, always felt like we were living in a movie, too surreal for us to really believe in even though this was our reality. Maybe it borderlines on cliche, but remains in the realm of possibility nonetheless, and I find it true to my experiences and the wonder of first loves.

To everyone who gave the time and attention to read this story, thank you. I initially made this "notes page" in a carrd but decided to transfer it to my DreamWidth (as of April 2021) so I have less accounts to manage, and until now, I still receive comments regarding this story despite how it's almost been a year and there are a ton of other marvelous SunaOsa writers that have emerged since then. This entry is truly a self-indulgent thing on my behalf as the writer, who maybe should just leave things unsaid or up to the imagination/interpretation of the reader, but if you are here nonetheless, willing to find out more and caring enough to do so, then you have my heart.

(Special shoutout to that one anon on my CuriousCat who recommended me a song that reminded them of my story! I'm including it in the references below because I've recommended that song since to many of my friends, who loved it, and now always think of this story whenever the melody starts coming in.)

II. REFERENCES.
The Forgotten Dialect of the Heart by Jack Gilbert
My love is a hundred pitchers of honey. Shiploads of thuya are what my body wants to say to your body. Giraffes are this desire in the dark. Perhaps the spiral Minoan script is not a language but a map. What we feel most has no name but amber, archers, cinnamon, horses, and birds.

I'll Wait by The Strumbellas
I'll wait, I'll wait to be the one
To catch you when you're falling
Always, always, I'll be the one
To answer when you're calling

Cinema Love by Patrick Martin
Do you believe in cinema love?
I never ever thought the stories could be true
But now I'm falling into movie love with you

"The Look" from The Half Of It
ELLIE: How do you know she wants to be kissed?
PAUL: Oh. She gives you a look.
ELLIE: A look?
PAUL: Yeah, like, um—okay, she gives you a look, and when you see that look, you make your move. Otherwise you come off looking like a real putz.

"Finding The Half Of Your Soul" from The Half Of It
NARRATOR: The ancient Greeks believed humans once had four arms, four legs, and a single head made of two faces. We were happy. Complete—so complete that the gods, fearing our wholeness would quell our need for worship, cleaved us in two, leaving our split selves to wander the earth in misery. Forever longing. Longing.

Longing... for the other half of our soul. It is said that when one half finds it other, there's an unspoken understanding.

A unity, and each would know no greater joy than this.
